POPULATION 9 BILLION!
All the food displayed above, the developed world takes for granted. Despite apparently incredibly high levels of food available in these countries, with the
global population expected to hit almost 9 billion by 2050, as can be seen in Figure 1, the long-lasting issue of
food security may begin affecting the entire world. These fears are reinforced
by the abiotic and biotic influences which are hindering efforts to provide
above and beyond expected demand for food. According to the Food and Agricultural Organsiation of the United Nations (FAO), food production will have to increase some 70% between 2005 and 2050. Annual cereal production will have to increase by almost a billion tonnes to 3 billion tonnes, and annual meat production will need to rise by over 200 million tonnes to reach 470 million.
